Accessibility assessment

Object description

The museum building is partially accessible. The building is one of six of the museum complex in the area with a permanent ethnological exhibition on the housing culture of ironmaking families. There are no accessible parking spots near the museum entrance. The entrance to the building has double doors that do not enable independent access to wheelchair users. The spaces are located on the ground floor and are difficult to traverse because of many high and unmarked thresholds. The sanitary facilities are adapted but were inaccessible during the documentation phase due to exhibition items being set up. The exhibition spaces are not adequately lit.

Adaptations

  1. People with mobility impairments:
  2. There is an accessible parking spot near the entrance,
  3. There is sufficient room to manoeuvre indoors,
  4. The exhibited items in the exhibition spaces are placed at a suitable height,
  5. The layout of the exhibited items enables wheelchair access.
  6. People with visual impairments:
  7. The reception desk is located in the immediate vicinity of the entrance,
  8. There are no abrupt transitions from light to dark spaces in the building.
  9. People with hearing impairments:
  10. There are no adaptations.

Deficiencies

  1. People with mobility impairments:
  2. The height of the reception desk is not adapted to wheelchair users,
  3. The changes of level in the interior of the building are not adequately addressed (high steps on doorframes).
  4. People with visual impairments:
  5. The entrance to the building is not easily recognizable (the car park is behind the building),
  6. The signboard at the main entrance is unsuitable,
  7. The edges of steps do not have contrasting visual markings.
  8. People with hearing impairments:
  9. The reception desk is not equipped with an induction loop.
