Accessibility assessment

Object description

The museum is inaccessible for wheelchair users, easily accessible for people with visual impairments and partially accessible for people with hearing impairments. The museum is located on the first and second floors of the building. There are two steps at the main entrance to the building that are without proper bridging. Access to the upper floors with exhibition spaces, workshop spaces, wedding hall and the sanitary facilities are only accessible via stairs. The museum has an additional exhibition space on the ground floor that is also inaccessible to wheelchair users due to two steps at the door. The museum provides several adaptations for people with visual impairments (tactile maps for people to navigate the museum, adapted tactile exhibition items, text in braille, an audio guide, contrasting visual markings etc.). The wedding hall is not equipped with an induction loop.

Adaptations

  1. People with mobility impairments:
  2. There is enough room to manoeuvre inside the gallery spaces (the upper floors are not accessible),
  3. The exhibited items in the exhibition spaces are placed at a suitable height.
  4. People with visual impairments:
  5. The entrance to the building is easily recognizable,
  6. The signboard at the main entrance is suitable,
  7. The signage and lettering in the building have contrasting visual markings and are readable,
  8. The necessary information is provided audibly (audio guide),
  9. The edges of stairs and the changes of level have contrasting visual markings,
  10. Selected exhibited items enable tactile exploration of the exhibition material.
  11. People with hearing impairments:
  12. The reception desk is adequately lit and enables lip-reading and interpreting facial expressions.

Deficiencies

  1. People with mobility impairments:
  2. There are no accessible parking spots,
  3. The building main entrance is not accessible (due to two steps),
  4. The changes of level in the interior of the building are not adequately addressed,
  5. The building does not have a lift for access to the museum spaces and the wedding hall,
  6. The building does not have accessible sanitary facilities.
  7. People with visual impairments:
  8. The reception desk is not located in the immediate vicinity of the entrance,
  9. The path to the remote reception desk is not marked with tactile floor markings,
  10. The signage and lettering in the building are not placed at suitable heights.
  11. People with hearing impairments:
  12. The wedding hall and reception desk are not equipped with an induction loop.
